AUDITION: The Memory of Water a comedy by Shelagh Stephenson

Characters: 4 women, 2 men
When Violet dies, her three daughters return home for the funeral. They have not seen each other for years and take the opportunity to clear the air. They share so many precious memories don't they? However they cannot agree on the truth of any of them... This poignant yet comic study of grief, families and memory is a modern classic.
Vi
40-60s. The ‘ghost’ of the mother of the three sisters. Charismatic and glamorous in her heyday, but not the best of mothers to her daughters.
Mary
40s. The middle sister. A doctor having a long-term affair with Mike, another doctor. She was a teenage mother and her estranged son, Patrick, is often in her imagination. She’d like another child. Witty and intuitive.
Teresa
50s. The eldest sister. Runs a health food shop with her husband, Frank. She feels the burden of family responsibility and is simultaneously resentful and protective of her younger sisters. Organised and sober.
Catherine
30s. The youngest sister. Likes to play the rebel through drink, drugs and lovers, but may not be quite as different to her sisters as she likes to think. Colourful but rather self-obsessed.
Mike
40/50s. Mary’s long-term lover. A married doctor, he cannot fully commit to Mary which puts increasing strain on their relationship. Intelligent but a little inscrutable.
Frank
50/60s. Teresa's husband who has no interest in the business they run. He’d rather open a pub. Opinionated and a little embittered.
